Good Beaumont or bust Saturday morning fellow Calgary live music lovers. Saturday night’s all right for fighting but it’s much better for live music and here’s a quick rundown of some of the events where the craic will be mighty indeed. Sled Island events still dominate the Cowtown landscape for both the day and night and here’s a few of em’. Tonight at Wine-Ohs its one of my favorite honky tonkin’ acts the Bitterweed Draw along with Construction and Destruction, The Wicks, and another local fave, SAVK. Tonight at the Ironwood its a Sled island Lilith Fair of sorts with Stefana Fratila, Maica Mia, Laura Leif, and Julianna Barwick. This afternoon at the Ironwood it’s a Prime Time Big Band day, the last one of the season featuring the vocal prowess of Deanne Matley & L.A. guitar master Larry Koonse - doors noon, music 2. BTW tonight Deanne and Larry are giving a CD release performance for “Can’t Help Falling” at the Epcor Centre’s Engineered Air Theatre, 8 PM start. Back to Sled Island and the Palomino with stuff upstairs and down including Shannon & the Clams, Johnny De Courcy, Gaytheist, Crystal Swell, Stepmothers and More! Starting this afternoon at 1, at Broken City Double Lunch Invades Sled featuring Tough Age, N3K, Adam Ess (of Needles//Pins), Pine Tarts and The Greater Wall. It’s world cup action at the Ship this afternoon but tonight its Sled Island time with Public Animal, White Women, and the Ex-Boyfriends. The feature event at Olympic Plaza this afternoon is Spiritualized, Rocket From The Crypt and guests, gates at 2. Tonight at Flames Central its St. Vincent with Doug Hoyer & Hello Moth. For more Sled Island Events visit sledisland/schedule/2014-06-21. Good to see guitar god Ray Montana back at ‘er in a big way these days; tonight he’s at the Blues Can. With Tim Williams up at the North Fair its Vernon Wills hosting the afternoon blues jam as he so ably does when Tim’s away. Mike Clark is also at the North Country Fair so his jam at Mikey’s Juke Joint will be sans-Mikey while tonight at Mikey’s Kate Melvina is back for one more night of your listening pleasure. Bill Dowey hosts his King Eddy Jam at the Shamrock this afternoon 3-7 before heading off to Murdoch’s with his Blues Devils in tow tonight. Legendary lap steel monster, Sonny Rhodes plays the Shamrock tonight. For info on the many more awesome Saturday jams in the city I encourage you to check out the Calgary Jam Scene Facebook page, the best source of Calgary jam intel around. Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar has a gooder tonight with Mariel Buckley & Kirsten Ludwig, BTW both have recent killer EPs you should pick up and remember half the $10 cover at Gravity goes to charity. Abbie Thurgood and Kerosene Road are finishing a two-night stand at Lynwood Station. Netty Mac and her Netty Mac train hit Century Casino. Lack of Prozack are back at Riverstone. Vinyl Trax are at Woody’s Taphouse South Trail location. Kyemara play Murrietas, Glow are at the Elbow River Casino and JG & The District play the Rose & Crown. A couple more rock out events besides Sled Island include The Slags at the Blind Beggar and Verns who have a slew of acts tonight including Franky Frog-Liquor Album Release Party with Class Action, Full And By, Philly Roach & The Frog Lickers, Scratch Buffalo, Knifedogs & Ryan Cole Eliason. The Bowness Boots & Hearts event celebrating the One Year anniversary of the da flood and how that community came together happens today at Hexters back parking lot with Gary Martin & the Heavenly Blues presiding 1-6. Remember theres a rubber boot dress code ;-} The Amplify YYC Youth fundraiser to benefit the Rock Guitar Shelter is on tonight at Original Joe’s Avenida and features local acts Berkley Barqs, Shea Damien Mustaphi - Life As A Song, Fresh as Death, Black Earth, Dunright, Puttin on the Foil and A War Within, 8 start. Big day at the Beaumont Blues and Roots Festival today, our ultimate destination, with the likes of tonight’s headliners Lindi Ortega, Whitehorse and Matt Andersen. Further north, Driftpile way, the North Country Fair is in full swing lslncca.ca/current/Images_current/2014%20NCF%20Schedule%20Brochure%202.pdf. Closer to home the Chris Culgin Band are back at the Auditorium in Nanton (last night). Can’t think of a better and more fitting place for Treeline & Shaela Miller to conclude their well-received cross-Canada tour than the Waterton Lakes Opera House tonight. Canada’s baddest band in the land, The Weber Brothers wrap up their two-night Canmore Hotel stand tonight while Hard Drive play the Drake Inn close by. Tim Vaughn finishes his three-night bluesrock stand at the Rose & Crown in Banff while KixxSin do the same country style at Wild Bill’s. Please note that in the near future I will be moving these weekend posts over to my new Facebook page and so I invite you to send a friend request to Savage Craic to ensure you can still see these postings. Play safe and keep it live!
