Good Evening All ! This is your daily update here from Potters Resort as we continue to host the 2015 Just Retirement World Bowls Championship. We’re halfway through the opening round of the Just Retirement World Indoor Singles and all eight seeds have progressed to the second round, some with more ease than others., Four matches were played today with seeds 3, 4, 13 and 14 all in action, against some hard hitting opposition and while number 4 Nicky Brett and Jonathan Ross at 13 won in straight sets things were a whole lot trickier for Rob Paxton seeded 3 and number 14 Mark Royal. In the first match of the day Paisley’s Ross boosted Scotlands second round interest to three as he came through his exchange against former champion Billy Jackson from Lincoln 8-5, 11-5. Ross got off to a slow start and found himself 4-0 off the pace after three ends, however he found some form and notched up three singles, a double and treble to command an 8-4 lead and was happy to concede a single on the last. He controlled the second set, and led 8-5 with two ends to play, but in the hunt for shots, Jackson, who was given a wild card entry into the event, smacked the head and instead of the jack running to the back of the rink, it bounced into the air and rebounded up the rink to Ross’s red bowls and he lost a treble which left the Scot as the winner. “I felt my play was a bit erratic” said Ross later. “ I rolled up well before the match but didn’t carry that into my game. I played a lot of good bowls but I also played a lot of short bowls too. I wasn’t consistent enough and like a school report ‘I know I’ll need to do better’. Brett also averted a potential tie break against newcomer Andy McLean from New Zealand. Despite dropping a single on the opening end, he reeled off eleven straight shots over the next five ends, which virtually sealed the first set for him. In the second McLean once again got off to a good start, scoring three successive singles to lead 3-2 after four ends, but Brett turned the score around with back to back trebles only for McLean to reply with full house to trail 8-7 playing the last before a further count of three saw Brett safely over the finishing line 12-5, 11-7. The remaining two matches went to tense shoot outs with Paxton from Taunton dropping singles on the last three ends of the opening set to leave crown green bowler Craig Newton with the first set under his belt at 7-5, but in the second Paxton dropped only two singles and won 11-2 and carried that momentum into the tie break where he counted the first end. Newton however bounced back and squared at one end all but Paxton counted the match winner with his penultimate delivery on the deciding end and with Newton’s last delivery falling short it was a relieved number 3 seed who moved through. Mark Royal from Stowmarket took on Irish qualifier Mark McPeak on the last match of the day and they kept the audience on the edge of their seats with an array of precision draw bowls and dramatic take outs. In a game of two halves, McPeak raced to the first set 9-4, dropping only two ends and in the second it was Royal’s turn, where a treble on the second end carried in to the set 10-4 and pushed the match into a tie break. Once again the first two ends were shared, with McPeak surely playing the bowl of the event so far, with an inch perfect wide draw to save a match lie, but victory went to Royal on the third as he trailed the jack to hold game and watch as the Irishman’s last delivery narrowly missed the head. Thursday’s matches will feature no less than five previous champions. First up is Welshman John Price against qualifier David Bolt, David Gourlay goes head to head against Robert Weale, Mervyn King tackles Cumbrias Tourcard winner Ben Sherwen and last but not least world number 1 Paul Foster knows he will have his work cut out against Blackpool’s Mark Dawes.
