Good Evening I am here to address the closing of Tent City. As you probably have all heard recently, what is know as “tent city” on Derrick St. is being closed down thanks to the efforts of one disgruntle homeless man named David Brawn who couldn’t make it in law school. He contacted the EPA and the DOT who has jurisdiction over that area and the DOT without listening to any good solution to the alleged problem just told everyone to leave. The supposed problem was homeless people urinating on the ground Just as hunters do when they go hunting or campers do when they go camping. What David failed to tell them was that he was doing the same thing across the street. This is a failure on the part of First Stop. They have an obligation to supply the homeless in that area with porta potties but did not. I am asking that you look into our city budget and find $195 @ month to help our Homeless Veterans and Citizens and supply them with a safe place to stay and proper facilities such as porta potties. I would like you for just one minute, to imagine yourself homeless. Imagine everything taken away from you. You have lost your job to the economy or illness. You have lost your home, your vehicle, your bank account empty, even your family, gone. How would you react? What would your mind set be? Would you want someone to help you and your family? Would you be mad if someone deliberately did something to make your situation worse? Would you do what ever it takes to “survive”? Every time someone uproots these unfortunate people they have to walk away from the few small possessions they have. The tent, food supplies, clothes etc. They start over every time. I am asking you to help them. I am asking that you use your position, your influence, your know how to reason with the DOT and Allow our Homeless Veterans & Citizens to live under the bridge in tent city or a comparable location while they try to get on there feet. The Homeless Veterans stood in our countries defense. We need to offer them something more then just 20 sq. ft. to put up a tent. One Homeless Veteran is one too many.
