Good For you RIVERKIDZ Auxiliary honors its volunteers Volunteers of the Martin Health Auxiliary were recognized in February for their cumulative hours earned through Dec. 31, 2013. Volunteers honored were: 300 Hour Award recipients: Patricia Constantin, Elizabeth Haddad, Barbara Parish, Bill Schoen. 500 Hour Award: Joan Beshong, Geoffrey Hawkes, Joanne Myer, Patricia Paul. 1,000 Hour Award: Leslie Boley-Hanlon, Lillian Pappas, Elizabeth Wilson, and Sunny and Sassy, animal assisted therapy dogs. 38,000 Hour Award: Pat Donovan. Anderson Middle rates video finalists Anderson Middle School was one of the participating middle schools from all over the world to rate the finalists in the “Ocean 180 Video Challenge,” a competition that challenges real-life scientists to communicate their research and findings in a video of three minutes (180 seconds) or less. And now the students in Melissa DuBois’ and Kirsi Johnson’s classes at Anderson Middle have the honor of announcing the winners of the Challenge in a pretaped video that will be shown at the 2014 Ocean Sciences Meeting later this month in Honolulu, Hawaii. The students filmed the announcements — which they must keep secret — on Feb. 13 in their classroom. The challenge is sponsored by the Florida Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence and funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation. COSEE Florida recognized the need for scientists tocommunicatemoreeffectively with the general public and created the Ocean 180 Video Challenge, asking ocean scientists to explain their research to middle school students in 180 seconds or less. Agency hands out stewardship awards On Feb. 5, Keep Martin Beautiful hosted its annual fundraiser and community recognition event, the Environmental Stewardship Awards, at Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club in Palm City. Keep Martin Beautiful received 59 nominations for school groups, individuals, businesses, government agencies and nonprofit groups who have gone above and beyond to promote environmental stewardship. Individual/Unsung Hero Award: Louise Carnevale for decades of service with the Environmental Studies Center. Nonprofit & Civic Group Award: Florida Oceanographic Society and Martin County for its Martin County Living Shorelines Project. Youth & School Award: Jensen Beach High School Marine II for projects throughout Martin County, River Advocacy, Storm Drain Labeling, Oyster Bagging, and the like. Innovation Award: R 3 Recycling for an 86 percent diversion of recyclable materials. River Advocate Award: River Kidz for advocacy and raising awareness about the rivers’ futures. Raleigh “Riley” Jackson Award: Vincent Morici for recycled tires and paint for the playground project. Environmental Leadership Award: U.S. Rep. Patrick E. Murphy for being a state and federal government advocate for the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. KMB President’s Award: Adriana Mancini, a teen volunteer with the Bessey Creek Team Green Recycle Buddies.
