Good Friday morning, folks! The Airport in St. Johns recorded 6 cm of overnight and into the morning hours of Friday. I was forecasting 10 cm, so I missed by a little bit. Ive been saying for the last few days, the forecast was very uncertain and a small shift east or west in the lows track could make a big difference. Looks like the low went a little farther east than it looked like it would yesterday afternoon...either way...Im happy to put this system behind me and move on to our next set of weather makers! A trough will lift across the Island (an occluded front actually) and this will spark off some light snow for many areas this afternoon and evening. Eastern Newfoundland may see a rain/snow mix. Temperatures for most areas will be near 0°. The Great Northern Peninsula will see slightly colder readings throughout the day. The trough moving across Newfoundland is in conjunction with a low that will slowly approach Labrador today. Across the Big Land expect widespread light snowfall today, with amounts generally less than 5 cm. Temperatures will peak in the minus teens west to near -7° on the coast. Looking ahead to tonight and Saturday... The area of low pressure bringing some snow to Labrador today will deepen as it heads for the coast tonight. This will bring some significant snowfall for areas like Churchill Falls to Happy Valley-Goose Bay and northeast overnight into early Saturday. Snow will end for the Labrador coast Saturday morning. Temperatures will again be very cold (-20s) behind this departing low. Another low will develop pass east of the Avalon Peninsula Saturday. This will cause snow to develop Saturday morning across much of eastern Newfoundland, which should taper to flurries by late afternoon. At this point it does not look like a major event, with amounts less than 10 cm. Temperatures on Saturday will start a few degrees below freezing, but will fall closer to -10 by evening across much of the Island. Snow squalls develop on the West Coast by mid-morning and continue throughout the day. More details on the weekend forecast later today! Time to go clear the driveway!
