Good Lord, what a travesty ... Please, NBC, NOOOOO more live versions of classic Broadway musicals ... So many problems to go over that I will refrain from discussing. The amazing sets and couple of fine performances by Broadway notables were not enough to cover for the general bad pace and timing and low energy ... and the weak quality of the key performances by Williams and Walken. The flying choreography was unimpressive (probably because computer graphics in todays film and TV makes flying look so realistic that I am now jaded (although I remember the black and white Mary Martin/Cyril Richard versions flying actually never seemed this bad) and the weird costuming didnt help production either. I know some new songs were added but was I right in detecting lots of changed dialogue (in some cases Im guessing it was to be PC about the Indian references ... Gawd!) too? It even sounded like some orchestral arrangements had also been revamped (unnecessary - as this is one musical which already had a stellar score). I had had such high hopes for a top notch and class version after the Sound Of Music travesty of last year. Again, I shall beg NBC to steer clear of any future live mountings of classic Broadway fare. Tonights dog looked as if some other mounting had been going on. Ouch ... The only thing I can think to do is cleanse the palette with some always reliable SCTV which was posted by a friend ... and I will enjoy John Candy playing Divine as Peter Pan ... NBC truly ventured into NEVER land tonight ... At least NBC got SCTV right ...
