Good Morning All ! Here is your report from yesterdays action here at Potters Resort. The Just Retirement Mixed Pairs Championship took centre stage at Potters today with the defending champions Laura Thomas and Paul Foster the headline makers as they safely negotiated their first hurdle in their attempt to take the title for the third year in a row. Against the reigning world indoor singles champion and Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist Darren Burnett and Canada’s Laura Hawryszko they got off to the perfect start chalking up the first set 11-1, and dropping only one end. However the match turned in the second with Burnett and Hawryszko leading all the way from the second to the penultimate end where they held an 8-5 lead before the defending champions rolled in a treble to square the set at 8-8 and win by one and a half sets to a half. Foster related “It’s difficult with only two bowls to ensure consistency but we were happy with our performance in the first set however in the second Darren’s partner played a wee bit better and we scratched about. We’re just happy to take a win”. Their opponents in Sunday’s semi-final will be Auchinleck’s Stewart Anderson and Amy Stanton who were making their debut in this event. They made a slow start and only scored on three ends in the opening set but in a game of two halves, only lost two on the second and after dropping the first of the best of three end shoot out on a tight measure and winning the second, Anderson drew the match winner with the last bowl of the game to progress 5-10, 10-2, 2-1. He said later “In the first set I was presented with opportunities but I failed to take them but I took full advantage of everything after that. I took my chances and it payed off”. While Brett admitted “We dropped our standard a bit in the second and they upped their game. My last bowl attempt at a draw was too heavy but that didnt lose us the game. I played too many rubbish bowls and missed too many runners in between that did the damage so you can’t call it on just one bowl”. Twice former champion Alex Marshall engaged in the third match of the day and along with partner Julie Forrest from Teviotdale, they too progressed to the semi-finals with a straight sets 8-6, 9-5 win. Marshall said later “we scored a full house in both sets and that was instrumental in our victory. Julie was very consistent from start to finish, she was outstanding”, with King admitting “We lost the game when we dropped a full house in each set so that was frustrating for us”. There will be no fourth title for David Gourlay, who last tasted success with Debbie Stavrou in 2012. Along with 17 year old partner Vicky Bilson, they lost to Marion Purcell from Wales and Taunton’s Rob Paxton 10-3, 7-5. In Sunday’s semi-finals Thomas and Foster clash with Stanton and Anderson while Forrest and Marshall go head to head with Purcell and Paxton for a place in Tuesdays title decider. Today attention turns to the Just Retirement Women’s Matchplay Singles with Julie Forrest opening the campaign against her pairs semi-final rival Amy Stanton for a semi final berth against former champion Rebecca Field or Laura Thomas. In the top half, title holder Katherine Rednall meets Marion Purcell from Wales with either Canadian Laura Hawryszko or England’s Victoria Bilson waiting in the wings.
