That is the incidence of non communicable diseases in developing countries i s estimated to be two thirds of the total disease burden. Most of these diseases are lifestyl e related and therefore can be prevented with effective public education, mass screening and increased political action. On this note, Sickle cell Association of Uganda, wi th the support of Ministry of Health and other organisations, intends to carry out a mass sickle c ell screening in communities and suburbs around Kampala and Wakiso on 17 th and 18 th June, 2 days prior to World Sickle Cell Day which is on 19 th June. As we commemorate this year’s World Sickle cell Day , we would like to increase awareness about sickle cell disease but also provide screenin g services for sickle cell anaemia using the sickling test which will provide us with the number of all those that carry the sickle cell gene irrespective of whether the carry the trait or have the disease. We intend to have powerful speakers and tents at th e various venues which will include markets, school play grounds and compounds, compoun ds for religious gatherings to mention but a few. The tents will harbor the waiting area, provisional lab and the work force for each site and the speakers will ensure the messages are heard over a wide range and also the invitation for testing is heard by a number of peop le. The data collected in the screening exercise will c ontribute to the current data that we have on the prevalence of sickle cell anaemia in Uganda. The Budget for the screening exercise is Ug shs 43, 626,000 as broken down in the budget below (table 1). Then on 19 th June, World Sickle cell Day, the celebrations will begin with a marathon from the Nurses hostel – Mulago to the celebration site (yet to be decided). This will be followed by speeches from invited guests, Lunch and cutting of cake. The Sickle Cell Association of Uganda will also exhibit its work, and crafts made by some of its members.
