Good Morning Cape Coast and beyond! Happy Wednesday! Atlantic Wave is on air and we are discussing a call by a local government expert to make assemble elections partisan. A local governance expert, George Kyei Baffour, has said local government elections must be made partisan. In his view, politicizing local government elections will inure to the country’s benefit.Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Kyei Baffuor said already, 30 percent of appointments made to the various assemblies are done on partisan basis.Similarly, he observed, the appointment of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives is done on “partisan basis. Parties are supporting assembly members.” It will be recalled that at a Constitutional Review series held in August 2013 under the theme “rethinking Ghana’s winner-takes all system,” the IEA noted that “there should be effective and truly decentralised local governance.” The CRC recommended three different processes in settling on Chief Executives for all three categories of local government leaders. It said there would be one approach for the selection of the chief executives for the six metropolitan assemblies, a different methodology for the 48 municipal assemblies and yet a different method for the 162 district assemblies. What impact do you think about this proposal? Share your views and thoughts with Kojo Brace and Kukua Biney on the Atlantic Wave.
