ITS NOT WHAT YOU SAY BUT HOW YOU SAY IT (PART I) Your voice tone speaks the message not the words used… words are just mere support or emphasis of what you mean if the tone matches the word not the other way round… this will be a 2 part series, today I will be defining what a voice tone is and the different effects. The following week I will discuss ways to improve your voice tone. What is vocal tone? *It is the quality and characteristics of the sound you create with your voice. *What does vocal tone do? It communicates messages. The vocal tone you use can radically change the meaning (message) of the words coming out of your mouth! – *The way the words are delivered and the manner we speak also make up the tone. *Tone of voice plays a major role in getting a message across. It is very useful in expressing emotions or opinions… 7 Effects of your voice tone People label and develop their perception of you by your voice tone. Just picture these words said in the various tones below “hello”, “How are you?”, “don’t do that again”,” I have something to tell you”. If said in a: Clear, strong and exuberance tone portrays confidence. A halting or a low volume tone may be considered weak, timid of just plain afraid. No inflection, regardless of how intelligent, may likely be thought of as boring and unimaginative. Curt, harsh, loud words can illustrate anger and rudeness. Soft, murmuring, soothing tones can express pleasure or bliss. A tone that rises in pitch at the end of the sentence indicates a question. A nasal and choppy tone can express irritation. Your tone of voice is such an important part of communication that it may often override the actual words youre using. To test this theory, try it on a dog. Speak in a loud, angry tone and say the word, Good dog. Watch him cower although you are actually complimenting him. Switch your tone to a soothing, cooing nature and call him a jerk, idiot or worst dog you ever met. Despite your insults, hell be wagging his tail and wanting to get closer to someone who is speaking so soothingly. Vocal tone can communicate (anger, direction, gratitude, friendliness, questioning, warning, etc.) even when the words are in a foreign language. So its important to know what tone to use. We learn habitual vocal tone choices from our parents, family, peers and culture. Be honest with yourself, do you need to work on your tone? Grab a close friend or co-worker - ask their honest opinion. Its important to find someone who will give you just that. Listen to what they have to say and take their criticism as constructive to help you develop a voice that will get you where you want to be in life. Food for thought Language shapes our behaviour and each word we use is imbued with multitudes of personal meaning. The right words spoken in the right way can bring us love, money and respect, while the wrong words—or even the right words spoken in the wrong way—can lead to a country to war. We must carefully orchestrate our speech if we want to achieve our goals and bring our dreams to fruition.
