Good Morning Friends, With the temperatures we are seeing, it would seem that winter is upon us, even if not officially so quite yet. This reminds us that all of the wildlife out there are now finding their winter home and we need to ensure that we are not encouraging behavior now that could be a problem over the next several months. Things like, block off any entrances to your crawl space, basement and attic so that you don’t get unwanted winter guests. If you have a chimney, make sure it has a cap on it. As funny as it is in movies to see some actor shimmy down the chimney and into the house, it isn’t quite as amusing when the one shimmying is a raccoon! Make sure your trashcans are secure and please, don’t feed wildlife in your back yard. You may love them, but not everybody does and it only takes one upset neighbor to get traps set and animals killed. I cannot tell you the number of calls I get every year from people who have been feeding wildlife in their backyards for years and now one neighbor or another is upset about it and the county or city is threatening to do bad things if the wildlife continues to be fed. Remember, there have been very few actual instances where winter was harsh enough that wild animals could not find natural food. What humans feed is not natural, even if you are feeding fruits and vegetables, they aren’t the type that wild animals are going to come across on their daily journeys, and most of the time what humans feed isn’t even healthy. Stay strong and remember, if left to their own, they will fend for themselves and giving a “helping hand” is sometimes more detrimental than helpful. Have a beautiful day all!
