Good Morning Hockeytown! Top Headlines: *Tatar Wants to Reach Zetterberg Level *Development Camp About Education, not Evaluation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Tatar Working Toward Reaching Zetterbergs Level Tomas Tatar certainly had a good season with the Wings this year but good is not where he wants to be, he wants to be counted among the likes of Henrik Zetterberg. Due to all the injuries this season Tatar was one of the Wings top scorers with 19 goals in 73 games. Though he proved himself capable offencively he needs to be better on the defencive side of the game. He also struggled in the play offs as did many of the young players who joined the team full time. He has the opportunity to work on his skills some more as he plays in the World Championships for his home country Slovakia. Here are some things Tatar had to say recently as reported by mlive: “I was hoping to get to this point by a certain point in my season. I am on the team, but I would like to be better, so I will have to work and prove myself every year. “I want to be at a level where Z and those guys are. I would like to see my role grow in this locker room. It would be nice to be one of those guys. Tatar also offered his evaluation of the Red Wings playoff series against the Bruins via mlive: “It was just hard for us to really match up with them. It seems like not really anybody played really good for us. It was a tough series and we didn’t play good like a team. They were just a better team. “Obviously, it’s a different game. Nobody did good in the (playoff) series. It didn’t matter if you were a young guy or a veteran.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Development Camp is about Education not Evaluation The Red Wings just wrapped up this years development camp and by everyones measure it was a success. The camp is designed to be a prospective players introduction to the Red Wings organization, it is about education not evaluation. The whole focus of the camp is to show up and coming players what they need to know to become a successful player for the Wings and in the NHL in general. While the attendees worked on hockey skills and fundamentals there was also instruction on subjects like how to deal with media and proper nutrition and cooking skills. Here is how Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill, who ran the camp, summed up the focus of the development camp as reported by mlive: I dont want to single out one player or another but the overall work ethic and attention to detail was very good. If you dont have that, youre never going to be a star in the NHL or at least help the team win. The one thing that I just talked to the players about was if theyre going to take one thing away from this camp, take away the level of work ethic and the daily level of attention to detail that the Detroit Red Wings organization demands. From our best players -- or at least the guys coming in who were highly heralded -- if its Anthony Mantha, if its Dylan Larkin, those guys showed the type of work ethic and attention to detail that you have to have and I think that filtered through the rest of the camp. Camp is about developing skill needed to be a successful player, not about evaluating where they are in their career according to Blashill. He offers Alexey Marchenko as an example, also via mlive: Alexey Marchekno, if we (evaluated) him just off this camp last year, it wasnt very good. But when he came back to main camp he was way better and last year he was one of our best D while he was healthy. We take it with a grain of salt but its a good starting point. Getting to know what theyre like as people is a big thing. Do they have the approach its going to take? Everybody is different. Everybodys got different personalities but do they have the core values its going to take to be a great player? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Information from mlive was used in compiling this post.
