Good Morning, Today Is October 4th, 2014 Time: 03:21 Hrs. PDT HEADLINE: Ebola Virus Hits Liberian Army, A Nurse, 3 Soldiers Dead Transcript: Monrovia – FrontPageAfrica has gathered from unimpeachable sources that three soldiers of the Armed Forces of Liberia have died of the deadly Ebola virus while others remain quarantined presently at Edward Binyah Kesselley (EBK) Military Barracks. The soldiers whose names have not been released by the army were said to have been undergoing treatment at the ELWA Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) in Paynesville. Military sources told FPA that it all started with the infection of a female soldier who had recently returned from vacation in Tubmanburg, Bomi County. The soldier reportedly fell ill and infected a nurse who treated her at the EBK facility, leading to the infection of two other soldiers. Armed Forces of Liberia officials told FrontPageAfrica Wednesday that quarantine measures had been in place since July and validated by representatives of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. “All necessary precautions have taken to protect the soldiers. Those soldiers and family members were outside the Barracks when they got sick, but the Barrack is being quarantined and the following measures taken: That no soldiers leave the barracks, constant hand washing, no visitation from family members,” an AFL ranking official told FPA on condition of anonymity Wednesday. According to the latest report dated October 1, 2014 from the World Health Organization, a large number of suspected new cases (and deaths among suspected cases) have been reported from Liberia over the past week. The report notes that it is very likely that a substantial proportion of these suspected cases are genuine cases of EVD, and that the reported fall in confirmed cases reflects delay in matching laboratory results with clinical surveillance data. “Efforts are being made to urgently address this problem, and it is likely that the figures will be revised upwards in due course. At the present time, the numbers of probable and suspected cases, together with those confirmed, may be a more accurate reflection of case numbers in Liberia. The counties of Bong, Grand Bassa, Margibi and Nimba continue to report high numbers of new cases. There has been little change in the number of new cases reported in Lofa, which borders Gueckedou in Guinea, for the past three weeks, with 38 confirmed and probable cases reported this week.” The total number of probable, confirmed and suspected cases in the current outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa reported up to 28 September 2014, according to the WHO, is 7178, with 3338 deaths. Countries affected are Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone. Source: frontpageafricaonline/index.php/news/3224-ebola-virus-hits-liberian-army-a-nurse-3-soldiers-dead
