Good Morning from KTJS News Here is my excuse for not getting news post up this morning. We’ve only got one computer here at KTJS that isn’t loaded down with production software and can run facebook without locking down. I prepare the column in document format and come back and paste on fb. WELL…I worked hard and had it all ready and the keyboard and mouse to this computer was gone. So I couldn’t even get to explain. Chad just retrieved the keyboard and mouse which he was using elsewhere. I still have column so will go ahead and post it as it was at 6am. Thanks, Angel and everyone who reads the news. Virtually all schools in the area are closed today. The only one that has not officially notified us is Lone Wolf. That includes WOSC in Altus, SWOSU in Weatherford and Sayre and all campuses of the Western Technology center. The Kiowa County Courthouse will open late today at 9am. The Kiowa County Department of Human Services will have reduced services until 9am today. Senior Citizens Centers in Hobart, Moutain View and probably most others will be closed today. City streets and county roads are very slck and hazardous. State highways are slick in spots but passable A 26 year old man died in the crash of his pickup on I-40 westbound near Erick Sunday morning shortly before 10am. Joshua Winfred Tate, whose home town was not listed, died at the scene of head and internal injuries. His truck ran off the highway and overturned two and a quarter times. The road was covered with ice and snow at the time. A man from Carnegie and a woman from Cyril were involved in the collision of a truck and a car at 10:25am Friday at the intersection of state highway 8 and a county road south of Anadarko. The truck driver, James Brewster, 44, from Carnegie was not hurt. The driver of the car Diannia Williams, 59 of Cyril suffered a head injury and was in stable condition at a Lawton hospital. The accident report stated both vehicles were northbound. The car struck the truck from the back trying to pass as the truck was attempting a turn. Kiowa County Commissioners will meet this morning at 10am at the courthouse in Hobart. Commissioners will consider a request from Hobart City Manager Jeff Cassida for assistance in demolishing the old Eugene Field Elementary School building. They will also consider a utility permit and look at policies for the Circuit Engineering District auction. The Oklahoma voter turnout in the November 4th election was dismal, less than 40 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. That’s the lowest since they started keeping records in the state. One of those concerned about that is State Representative Todd Russ of Cordell. We’ll have some of his comments in his own voice on KTJS News today. Eight Hobart High School band students auditioned for the Southwestern Oklahoma Band Directors Association all region Honor Band. About twelve hundred students in grades 7 thru 12 from 57 schools auditioned. Two students from Hobart were selected. Jessica Hunter and Waylon Lewellen were picked. Jessica also qualified for the final round of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association all state band auditions to be held on December 6th. The bands fundraiser products will arrive this Thursday November 20th. Band parents are asked to make sure someone is available to come by after school to pick up any items your child may have sold. The Hobart Middle School and High School bands and choirs invite everyone to the annual Christmas Concert Monday December 8th. The concert will be held at the First Baptist Church starting at 6:30pm.—Bands director Dr. Jonathan Whitmire. Hobart American Legion Post 117 charity bingo is tonight. Doors open at 5pm. The Rocky Senior Citizens dance is tonight has been cancelled. Western Oklahoma State College in Altus will hold a public forum Thursday November 20th at 5pm in the multi purpose room. There will be a discussion about the college’s new strategic plan. They are looking for input from citizens all around this area. You’re also invited to complete an on line values survey that has eight questions and takes just a few minutes. Find it on the W.O.S.C. website under mission vision value survey. W.O.S.C will also hold its annual holiday music program Saturday December 6th at 7:30pm in the Herschal H. Crow Fine Arts Center. It’s free and open to the public. Xi Epsilon Tau Chapter of Beta Sigmi Phi in Hobart is once again hosting the Christmas Tour of Homes Sunday December 7th from 2 till 4pm. Included on the tour are the homes of Deanna and Leroy Fox, Kari and Thomas Elizondo, and Nancy and Jeff Ledford. Instead of a fourth home tour will feature a stop at the Kiowa County Museum. The Hobart Junior Main Street youth will greet guests and serve up snacks. This is a great opportunity for your and your holiday guests to see our fine museum. Advance tickets are seven dollars. They will be ten dollars at the door. All funds raised are plowed back into the community to help out in many ways. Contact any sorority member or Marilyn Thrift for tickets at 726 3242. HELP!! Hobart’s Shortgrass Playhouse is in desperate need of four men to fill out the cast for its upcoming production of the play “Leading Ladies” at City Hall Theatre in Hobart. They must be 18 or older. It’s a really fun play. If you’ve never done this it should be on your bucket list. You will always remember it and will probably make some new friends. The meeting in Mangum with Dr Bob Blackburn, Executive Director of the Oklahoma History Center has been candelled tonight due to the weather., The Kiowa County Historical Society will have their annual Moonlight Madness Bake Sale fundraiser for the museum in Hobart at 5:30pm Thursday November 20sth at the Hobart Chamber of Commerce office on 4th street downtown. Bake something for the sale and bring it or make a donation. There will be some holiday casseroles, pies, cakes, and lots of home made goodies. –Galeen Chain. There will be a meeting for members of the Hobart High school Senior Class and parents this Sunday, November 15th at 1:30pm at the Kozy Diner in Hobart. They will be discussing plans for the after prom event next spring. The Hobart Fire Department is now taking names of children ages 2 to 12 in need of Christmas gifts for the toys for tots program Wednesday November 12 and will continue to take names through December 12. Those submitting names must be the parents or legal guardians of the children named. Donations of new toys or money to buy them are also needed. The Hobart FFA annual labor auction will be held Wednesday November 18th at 6pm at the Hobart High School Cafeteria. The First Baptist Church in Roosevelt will hold a community dinner Wednesday November 19th from 6 till 7:30pm. There will be turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings. Those attending are asked to bring a dessert. Carry outs will not be available at this meal. The Hobart Chamber of Commerce will hold an open house Thursday November 20th from 9am till 10am at the Chamber office on west 4th downtown. Everyone is invited to stop by. The First Baptist Church in Roosevelt will hold a community dinner Wednesday Nov 19 from 6 till 7:30pm. There will be turkey and dressing and all the trimmings. Come and bring a dessert. Carry outs are not available at this meal. The public is invited to a “Stars Over the Wichitas” program this Friday and Saturday November 21st and 22nd beginning about 30 minutes after sunset. Meet at the Bolder Lost Lake Picnic area entrance a mile west of Camp Doris. The programs will last about two hours. Bring your own optics or use the refuge 19 inch Dobsonian Telescope. Reservations are required. They can only take 15 people per program. First come, first served. Call 429 2151 9am till 5pm. There are four OBI blood drives this week. Three will be held on Wednesday—Mangum, Tipton, and Weatherford, and one Friday at Altus Air Force Base.
