KTJS will be airing the OUvs Clemson football game this afternoon from the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Pregame starts at 2:30pm and kickoff at 4:30pm A Hobart man was arrested last week in connection with the theft of a laptop computer from the Kiowa County Courthouse. Sheriff Bill Lancaster reports the computer was stolen the afternoon of December 23srd from the courthouse desk of Deputy Dale Wilmeth. He and Deputy Clay Farrington with the assistance of other employees identified a suspect, Jeffrey Hurley from video surveillance. With the assistance of Deputy David Earls, Hurley was located at a trailer in the area of Washington and Main Street. Sheriff Lancaster said Hurley admitted stealing the computer. He was arrested for grand larceny and on drug charges. Hurly had previously served five months in prison on another charge. He had been released last September. Kiowa County now has a Certified K-9 Detection Team. Deputy Clay Farrington and K-9 “Shadow” traveled to Ardmore Friday to complete their certification and passed all the tests. They will be used on patrol duties to locate illegal narcotics. They will also be seen in Kiowa County schools. Sheriff Lancaster hopes everyone had a merry Christmas and looking forward to a happy and safe new year. He thanked all the Sheriff’s Department employees for their hard work in 2014 and look forward to 2015. Kiowa County Commissioners will meet Monday morning at 10am at the court house in Hobart. The agenda appears to be just routine. Several construction projects are under way at Altus Air Force Base. Projects include:\ Replacement of sewer lines, an estimated $5.6 million dollar job projected to be complete by next summer. Repair of “Club Altus” roof for $620 thousand dollars to be completed by the end of January. Phase one of the new KC-46 Simulator Buildings. That’s the big one, some $23.1 million dollars sto be completed in December 2016. Concrete is being poured now. Phase one is the Flight Training Center and Fuselage Trainer. The base Civil Engineering Squadron says there will be times when some base streets and roads will have to be shut down for lay pipes and replacement of asphalt. Each project helps sustain the base mission and keep the air base facilities functioning. Elk City’s high school agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor, Larry Long, has received a major award at the National Association of Agricultural Educators convention in Nashville, Tennesse. The award cited Long’s well rounded program that involves students in civic projects, patriotic activities, leadership development as well as raising and showing of prize animals. Elk City’s Ag program has two dual purpose ag classrooms and labs, anjd a large well equipped show area as well as a school farm and farrowing house.l Joanie Southard, mother of sophomore FFA member Jimmy Southard said Long is a special teachers and that she is grateful for the care and instruction he has given her children. The next Hobart Food Pantry distribution will be Thursday January 8th. The Kiowa Tribal Complex in Carnegie will be today through Sunday, will re-open Monday at 8am The Hobart American Legion charity bingo will start its bingo games one half hour earlier beginning Monday January 5th. Legionnaire Joe Carney says the mini games will begin at 5pm and the regular games will start at 6pm. He noted that cash prizes range from ten dollars to one thousand dollars. He says more people are discovering the fun of bingo. The Nature Center at Quartz Mountain Nature Park is closed Saturday January 3rd while Sue the naturalist is celebrating the Holidays out of state. Eagle Watches start 9 AM Saturday January 3rd at the Group Camp Community Building, so the Nature Center will open after the eagle watch concludes. A New Years Eve singing will be held Wednesday December 31st at the Plains Avenue Church of Christ on highway 152 in Dill City. It begins at 7pm and everyone is welcome. The Cooperton Senior Citizens Dance will have a New Years Eve Dance Wednesday December 31st from 8pm till midnight. There will be a black eyed pea pot luck dinner. The Wichita Valley boys will provide live music. Everyone is welcome—Kenneth Boyd. Cooperton will host a dinner Friday, January 2nd at 6:30pm at the Cooperton Community Building. The Cooperton Fire Department will make chili for all. Please bring side dishes to complement the meal. Everyone is invited. –Claire Johnson. o.B.I.
