Good News Daily Volume XIV October 19-25, 2014 Number 42 Sunday, October 19 Psalm 150 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. (v.6 NIV) The air you are breathing right now was just breathed by someone else. It might have been someone next to you. It might have been someone on the other end of your house. It might have been your next-door neighbor or…are you ready for this? It might have been a beauty pageant winner, a paraplegic, an Asian banker, a South American politician, a European farmer, an African engineer, or an Australian educator. Do you get the picture? “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord,” because everyone around the world shares the same air. Song of Solomon 2:8-17; Psalms 148, 149; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13; Matthew 16:13-20 Monday October 20 Luke 9:51-62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (v.62) Wow. This statement sounds harsh. In Palestine, the land is rocky. If you look behind you while plowing, you will hit a rock and be thrown off course. Discipleship required focus. Jesus understood this and the fact that doing anything well requires focus. Maybe we aren’t going to lead lives like the disciples. That’s okay, as long as we stay focused on our relationship with Jesus. Song of Solomon 4:1—5:1; Psalm 25; Revelation 7:1-8 Tuesday, October 21 Song of Solomon 5:2—6:3. I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine; he browses among the lilies. (6:3) Love can’t be forced, but do not mistake its power when it is accepted. God’s great love for us is evident in His gift to us…Jesus. If we are His, then He is ours. He seeks nothing less than the full commitment of our hearts. Psalms 26, 28; Revelation 7:9-17; Luke 10:1-16 Wednesday, October 22 Luke 10:17-24 “However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (v.20) We are given life on earth and life in heaven. His eye is on the sparrow. He watches over our going out and our coming in. He is with us at birth and with us at death. He knows our gifts, the secrets in our hearts, and our names are written in heaven. It is enough. Song of Solomon 8:5-14: Psalm 38: Revelation 8:1-13 Thursday, October 23 Psalm 37:1-18 But the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. (v.13) I recently learned another verse from this psalm. Verse 4 says: “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” This is a lovely verse and I’m sure many people are familiar with it. However, verse thirteen got my attention. I’m way too serious sometimes, but I’m making an effort to laugh more. I love the image of the Lord laughing. It reminds me not to take myself too seriously. Esther 1:1-4, 9-12, 16-22; Revelation 9:1-12; Luke 10:25-37 Friday, October 24 Esther 2:1-11 Every day he walked back and forth near the courtyard of the harem to find out how Esther was and what was happening to her. (v.11) It was a good thing Mordecai adopted Esther after her parents died, forbade her not to reveal her nationality and family background, and that he already had high standing in Xerxes’ court. This allowed him to walk near the harem courtyard without suspicion and check in with Esther. Mordecai knew how the previous queen, Vashti, had disobeyed King Xerxes and had been punished. He understood the balance of power within the court. As for the things Mordecai did for Esther before she became queen, he knew he wasn’t acting alone. Mordecai understood who had the greatest balance of power and it wasn’t Xerxes. It was God. Psalm 31; Revelation 9:13-21; Luke 10:38-42 Saturday, October 25 Esther 2:12-23 But Mordecai found out about the plot and told Queen Esther, who in turn reported it to the king, giving credit to Mordecai. (v.22) The plot was an assassination attempt on King Xerxes. Thanks to Mordecai, Xerxes wasn’t killed. The officers who plotted against Xerxes were executed. There appears to be a catch in the story. Queen Esther gave Mordecai credit for uncovering the treason, but all King Xerxes did for the man who prevented his death was to give Mordecai written credit in the book of the annals. Some reward! However, this didn’t concern Mordecai. Those who understand God holds the balance of power also understand rewards are found in God’s love and favor.
