Good News in Carey, too! Look at this from The Courier: Carey mayor highlights village’s business growth Posted On Tue. Jan 28th, 2014 By JIM MAURER STAFF WRITER CAREY — In the annual “state of the village” address, Carey Mayor Steve Smalley highlighted plans by Continental Structural Plastics to invest more than $18 million in a new paint area at the plant and other improvements which will add 40 to 50 jobs. Smalley made his presentation during the Carey Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner meeting held Monday at Moreno’s Casual Dining. Continental is the largest employer in Wyandot County with more than 500 employees. The village, with assistance from the Wyandot County Office of Economic Development, will seek two grants totaling $1 million to help with the $2.3 million cost of a new electric substation to be constructed across from the company on Wyandot County 96. Also, Alpha Warehousing, also on Wyandot County 96, is constructing another building which it will lease to Continental Structural Plastics. Smalley also said Vaughn Equities has begun construction of a speculative building in Arrowhead Commerce Park, about a 24-acre property owned and being developed by the company, which will be annexed into the village. The village has extended water service to the property. Sewer and electric service will also be extended, while a storm water drainage tile is being constructed to serve the present and future drainage needs of the site. “Helping to sustain companies like CSP and Vaughn’s, as well as the smaller local businesses downtown, is, and has been, critical to our community’s economic health,” he said. Construction will begin this year on a new pre-kindergarten through high school building off South Vance Street on about 40 acres of land adjacent to Memorial Park. The estimated $32 million building will be funded mainly by the state, with Carey residents paying about $10.9 million through a 37-year bond issue approved by voters last year. Separately, an annual 2 percent increase in electric rates over the next four years was approved by Village Council last year to boost the electric fund revenue. Likewise, council approved a 20 percent annual water rate increase for the next four years to maintain that fund’s balance. Chamber President Dave Underwood said the organization is developing a new website design and plans are being made for a new “start of summer event” in June in downtown. Other chamber officers include: Sara Lou Binau, vice president; Jerry Vent, treasurer; and Debbie Smalley, secretary. Other board members are Dan Beach, Amy Yeater, Trisha DeAmicis, George Privateer, and Taylor Young, who is the Carey High School Distributive Education Club of America president
