Good Saturday evening, folks! A strong area of low pressure - TopicsExpress

Good Saturday evening, folks! A strong area of low pressure will pass through the Gulf of St. Lawrence early Sunday and will end up off the Labrador coast by Sunday afternoon. This track will bring very high winds and heavy rain to Newfoundland beginning after 2 AM tonight and continuing through much of the day on Sunday. Much of southeast and central Labrador will see heavy snowfall from this low late tonight and Sunday. The weather should calm down for the Province Sunday night. The wind will be the bigger deal with this storm across Newfoundland than the rain. The south coast will see the strong winds between 2 AM and 9 AM Sunday, with gusts in the 110-130 km/ range and sustained winds between 60 and 85 km/h. The eastern and northeastern/northern parts of the Island (including the Avalon and St. Johns) will see those same winds between 9 AM and 2 PM Sunday. The winds look to peak in the Metro between 11 AM and 12 PM and should slowly back off through the rest of the day. Strongest winds will southeast on the south coast and southwest across the rest of the Island. Temperatures across the Island will climb into the single numbers above freezing late tonight and Sunday morning, before falling back toward freezing Sunday evening. Snow squalls start back on the West Coast by evening as well. **I urge you to make sure everything and everything that could blow is taken in or tied down.** Rainfall will be in the 15-25 mm range for much of the Island, with up to 40 mm possible along the entirety of the Islands southern coastlines. Most of the rain fall after midnight into the first half of Sunday. (see map below) The snow in central and southeastern Labrador will develop early Sunday morning and continue through much of the day, before tapering to flurries Sunday night. Snowfall amounts look to be in the 15-30 cm range, with perhaps more in some spots if the snow is fluffy. Temperatures climb into the mid to lower minus single numbers. Snow will mix with rain in extreme southern Labrador on Sunday, as warmer air wraps around the low. (see map below) Lots of warnings are in place from Environment Canada across the Province. Details here: weather.gc.ca/warnings/index_e.html?prov=nl Have a great night and stay safe! Cheers, Meteorologist Eddie Sheerr
