Good Sunday morning. This is another wonderful sermon form Goodlettsville church of Christ. Are you up for the challenge? CHRISTIAN PARENTING Psalms 127:3-5 (ESV) Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of ones youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. WE HAVE TO PERPARE OUR CHILDREN TO LIVE IN THE WORLD AND NOT LET THE WORLD LIVE IN THEM. WE MUST BE A GOOD EXAMPLE ● Teach them all the things Jesus did and taught. ** Acts 1:1 (ESV) The Promise of the Holy Spirit 1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, ** Proverbs 22:6 (ESV) Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. ** Ephesians 6:4 (ESV) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. ● Children are like balls of clay: They are soft and pliable and all the grown ups in their lives make permanent impressions. ● Proverbs 6:20-23 (ESV) 20 My son, keep your fathers commandment, and forsake not your mothers teaching. 21 Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, (How do we raise children in such a way that when they leave home they will make responsible moral decisions?) ● 2 Timothy 1:5 (ESV) I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. ** 2 Timothy 3:13-17 (ESV) while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. ** Titus 2:1-8 (ESV) Teach Sound Doctrine 1 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be sober- minded, dignified, self- controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self- controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self- controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. WE MUST PROVIDE A PEACEFUL ENVIRONMENT ● Provide words of peace – ** Ephesians 4:29 (ESV) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. ** Ephesians 6:4 (ESV) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. ● Pursue peace – ** Romans 12:18 (ESV) If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. ** Hebrews 12:14 (ESV) Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. ● Be a peacemaker – ** Matthew 5:9 (ESV) “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. ** James 3:18 (ESV) And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. ● Do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ , the Lord of glory, with partiality. ** James 2:1 (ESV) 1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. ** James 2:9 (ESV) But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. ** James 2:13 (ESV) For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. WE MUST PROVIDE A LASTING LOVE ● True love must be planted deeply in the hearts of our children. ● 1 John 3:16-18 (ESV) By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the worlds goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does Gods love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. ● John 10:10-15 (ESV) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 1. Protect your child’s innocence! 2. Protect your child’s trust! 3. Protect your child’s soul!
