Good Tuesday Morning Everyone! This is gonna be a good day! The planets are all just about perfectly lined up, I need just one more cup of coffee to get that done.. :) Turn you computer off at night or leave it running all the time? Ah, that is the question. I have a lot of people asking me that, which is best? Well, I tell people all the time that a computer is like a car, it will get you from point a in the world to point b, just by a few clicks of the mouse. If you leave your computer running all the time, its like leaving your car idling all the time, so you dont have to start it when you go some where. With your computer, when it runs all the time, the fans and some electronic components get wear. When your fans start to go out, it then starts to cause serious heat problems within your computer. In addition, when it runs all the time, it continuously circulates air thru your computer, and along with that comes all the dust and whatever else you have in your environment, thus causing dust/animal hair/dirt buildup in critical heat syncs. (The component that takes the heat away from you central processing unit, Video card chips and power supply units). When that process starts, thats when the capacitors around your heat sinks start to get hot, then they swell, then they leak. When they start to swell, thats when you get all kinds of quirky things happening in your computer from freezing up, to rebooting, non-responsive to finally not booting at all. Then its time for a new motherboard, and in most cases, its not cost effective to replace the motherboard versus just replacing the unit. And laptops are not quite as bad, but still susceptible to all the same symptoms as a desktop. I recommend turning it off at night, or if youre not going to be on it for several hours. I also recommend bringing your computer in once a year for service, (just like your car.. :) ) That way, we can clean all the debris out of your fans, check to make sure theyre all working, do any updates that you need and just do a general tune up.
