Good Tuesday Morning. I am sure we have all seen the meme going around that says It is Merry Christmas not Happy Holidays. Every time I see it I have to shake my head in despair. Because for some people it is not Merry Christmas. There are lots of people who do not celebrate Christmas. There are Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, other religions and even come Christian sects that do not celebrate the holiday. To me it is self centered and even arrogant to expect everyone to acknowledge Christmas while ignoring the other Winter Holidays that are celebrated. That is why a lot of retailers say Happy Holidays because they want to be inclusive and not exclude anyone. Shouldnt we do the same? If Christianity is a religion of love and Christians are called to love their neighbors then wouldnt showing that love include being sensitive to their faith and traditions? Also isnt love not suppose to demand getting their own way all the time? So yes celebrate Christmas if that is your tradition and wish those who you know celebrate Merry Christmas but out of respect and love for others take a moment to wish them an appropriate greeting. If you do not know how or what they celebrate then Happy Holidays is appropriate. Whatever and however you celebrate or even if you do not I wish you peace, love and light this month and all the year through. Love yourself, love others and allow others to love you.
