Good afternoon Africa. The Baby, The Dog and the Forest. Back in 2005 a story that many of you probably have never heard of emerged from Nairobi, Kenya that involved a dog and a baby. The story a true one at that touched the hearts of many thousands of Kenyans creating love and joy for all. The domestic African dog thats now residing at the Kenyan SPCA where she spent her retirement sleeping on a soft bed and teaching school children with her fellow teacher about animal welfare, made quite a discovery. Her name is Mkombozi. Where not quite sure whether Mkombozi is still with us, however if she is she is still a hero in our eyes. Mkombozi became somewhat famous in 2005 after she saved an abandoned new born baby from near death, carrying the baby back to her own home where she was nursing her young that sadly later died. The infant that was wrapped in nothing but a few nursing rags would not have survived more than a few hours in the current climate baby was left within in the Ngong Forest. However Mkombozi that had been foraging that day foraged out little baby to the joy of many. The story could have been a whole lot different though had Mkombozi not been brought up around children or for the sheer fact she had given birth to pups. Maternal instinct? Most likely and the fact she was brought up around caring and well mannered, polite and loving children in Nairobi. Mkombozi was seen dragging the bundle of rags that had the crying baby within over a busy road and through a tricky barbed wire fence of which she then vanished into the impoverished Nairobi neighborhood where she was living with her puppies. The little baby and the dog were soon discovered by the local school children that had heard the baby crying next to their wooden shack, Aggrey Mwalimu, mother of the boys and owner of the shed, found the baby lying next to the dog and a puppy. Baby was quickly rushed to intensive care where she was treated for exposure and dehydration. Mkombozi had not only saved the day but had saved the little one from a near death. Baby spent the next few weeks in intensive care making a full recovery. Its not uncommon for new born babies to be abounded in Kenya where poverty is high, the media and press do regularly report on abandonment however rarely are the mothers ever located. After her last surviving puppy died, the mothering dog was taken in by the Kenya SPCA and tended to. The staff named her Mkombozi, which is swahili word for Savior. Mkombozi when tending to the newborn abandoned baby wasnt to happy when rescuers turned up to take the baby from her which is expected from mother that was just trying to protect her young. Jean Gilchrist, executive director of the KSPCA recounted: She wasnt happy when we all poured into the compound. She decided to leave, but kids in the compound brought her back for the bath because she was full of ticks. The tan short-haired mixed breed who was heavy with milk from nursing, was bathed and de-wormed and taken to the shelter. Gilchrist speculated that the dog was possibly trying to care for the child because most of her puppies had died. She reckoned it was a young animal and possibly wanted to bring little baby up, Gilchrist said. It is something to do with the canine-human bond. Other dogs might have just left her there to die. ... Shes obviously a very special dog, Gilchrist added. She is a very street-wise dog, that is for sure. The other dogs in the compound did not look very well, but she is the fattest of them all - she obviously knows how to look after herself. The KSPCA decided to adopt Mkombozi soon after, putting Mkombozis days of scavenging for food to an end. And baby Angel, as she was called also found a new home. Her story generated a lot of interest and she was adopted after police were unsuccessful in finding her mother and she was not claimed. Were it not for Mkombozi’s kindness and heroic act, Angel would not be alive today. We didnt want to share this story in case mother did actually read it, we have many hundreds of thousands of Africans viewing our sites and its not uncommon for parents to contact us regarding many matters. However for the love of dog, the baby and what could have been a more tragic event weve decided to highlight the story to make aware to the public to be vigilant about mothers that they may know could abandoned their baby at such vulnerable times., Watch the video here - youtu.be/Q3i9a18Gcqc Stay vigilant people. Its not uncommon for pets to bring out a gestating mothers maternal instincts or to protect new born babies that human mother have given up. Back in 2008 in Argentina an identical case emerged of which mother dog protected little baby in a field until rescuers arrived. A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said that Friday. The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies. A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house. The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires. The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said. The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said. She took it like a puppy and rescued it, Salcedo said. The doctors told us if she hadnt done this, he would have died. The dog is a hero to us. Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, said police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby, who doctors say was only a few hours old. Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said. The next morning, the childs mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities that the 8-pound, 13-ounce infant is hers, Melia said. The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident. The child was transferred to a childrens hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from
