Good afternoon; I have read all of the comments related to the decision to increase council remuneration (regardless of what they call it). I am not sure how many of you are aware of the ongoing discussions to spend upwards of $1 Million Dollars extending Herbert Street to address the overwhelming demand for industrial space here in Gananoque!! What I find absurd about all of this, is this quote from the Economic Development Mangers recent report - With the decrease of the manufacturing industry, tourism is becoming a vital component of many local economies, Gananoque and The Thousand Islands in particular. Do these people read their own reports?? And - becoming vital !!! Where has this person been since arriving here?? BECOMING ??? - Tourism has been vital for about 100 years. If this component of Gananoque has only become vital this week, what was it before that??? It would seem to me, that creating a fund to support existing business and then offer incentives to qualified retailers to locate here and make choosing Gananoque a no brainer (as dumping The Chamber of Commerce was recently described to me by council) that would be a huge leap forward. The town via their own CIP has cancelled taxes on The Mitchell and Wilson condo project for years to come (a fact quietly left out of the hoopla for giving the land away) . It would seem to me, if they have those millions to toss away and another $1 Million pipe dream for Herbert Street - It would be far better to spend money where it matters. Create a fund and hire qualified people to go and find viable retailers to fill King Street vacancies . Then many of the tourism survey issues will fall into place and many of the comments I read this week will also be addressed. A vibrant King Street with brightly lit signage - shops offering high quality goods (including socks) is a project far more likely to garner results immediately where as these other toss a bucket of cash into the air schemes seem to be just that. recorder.ca/2013/11/08/huge-hikes-in-council-pay
