Good afternoon Malawi. Sean posted his thoughts on moving forward through reflection and thought of bringing it here for all of us to reflect. What are your thoughts on his proposals Sean Kampondeni As a nation, we need an opportunity to pause and reflect on our history since independence. Such reflection should include people in all regions and representatives of all stakeholders. We should do it together as Malawians in corporate gatherings held in school halls, churches, stadia, and village grounds across the country. At those gatherings, leaders should facilitate a time of reflection, giving people the opportunity to (1) publicly name and expose the ills they have suffered AND perpetrated in this country since its founding so that together we can forgive and be forgiven (2) publicly name the benefits and blessings they have enjoyed in this country since its founding so that together we can give thanks (3) publicly describe the dreams and aspirations they have for the future of Malawi so that together we can commit ourselves to a common future. Then all the sentiments expressed should be crystallized by a panel of bright minds into a brief statement of National Vision, and translated into every dialect of our country. The Chichewa and English versions should be read publicly every year on our independence day, at every presidential inauguration, and at the start of every sitting of Parliament. All this, in my view, would give us as a people a sense and statement of National Memory about which parts of the past we cherish and which parts we repudiate, as well as a statement and sense of National Purpose about what future and values we all want to build together and hold both our leaders and foreign partners accountable for regardless of who is in government. And I can think of no better time to do this whole exercise than the week of July 6, 2014, when our country will be marking 50 years of independence just seven weeks after electing a new government.
