Good article on what has become a nationwide epidemic... Our law recognizes that a dog has a right to be safe and to be secure in his property. When a police officer — or anyone, for that matter — trespasses, to then suggest that theyre justified in killing the dog because the dog was not all warm and cuddly and friendly really stretches the point. Richard Rosenthal, Esquire Unfortunately, these incidents are limited to real property. Last week, a police officer shot and killed a Labrador that was sitting inside a vehicle, with the window rolled halfway down. The officer claimed he thought the dog was a pit bull, like that is supposed to be an excuse for his unjustified and absolutely indefensible actions. The author is correct - families who experience this trauma need to sue police departments until they implement mandatory training for officers in dog related situations and enact policies that work to prevent these incidents from happening.
