Good call Mr President! Yes let’s make everyday a ‘MADE-IN-GHANA’ day in an attempt to transform the society and the economy. However, Your Excellency, as I’m sure you are aware, this won’t happen in a vacuum in the absence of a clear industrialization plan which puts premium on competitive manufacturing and production in a bid to grow a new base of entrepreneurs and business leaders. This notwithstanding, the following questions continue to bug my fickle mind in my attempt to understand how we can truly make MADE IN GHANA a reality in the medium term: 1. Will our proxy trade policy in the coming years still be anchored on imports of finished and sometimes substandard Chinese and other foreign goods which continues to put massive pressure on a Cedi whose value keeps eroding by the day? 2. What happened to competitive import substitution to promote development and self-sufficiency? What are the steps being undertaken to promote more local consumption using the State’s Purchasing Power? Can’t we craft a policy which says 70% of School feeding items or the food served at Sate Functions MUST be sourced locally? I believe can easily start with local meat and other staples. 3. What are the steps being undertaken to ensure access to credit for SMEs at preferential interest rates? What are the steps being undertaken to build transport hubs and other networked infrastructure services directly and indirectly impacts the value chain and thus on business transaction costs? 4. What are the steps being undertaken to decongest the ports to reduce clearing times? 5. What are the steps being undertaken to ensure reliable supply of electricity and other utilities at a fair price which doesn’t disincentivise utility producers?
