Good evening, Facebookburg: With September soon coming to a close, I would be remiss to not write one final blurb about a medical condition known as PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome). September is PCOS Awareness Month and this may be the first time youve heard about it. The photos are self-explanatory. PCOS is a condition that is often under-diagnosed and is the number one cause of infertility among women. Symptoms of the condition may vary from patient to patient, but for many of us who have PCOS, weight management is major issue. I was diagnosed with the condition by an endocrinologist a few years ago after gaining substantial weight, skipping cycles, thinning hair and depression. Not all PCOS patients battle weight issues, but many of us do because our hormones are all out of sync - remember, insulin is a hormone and when a womans body is resistant to the way it uses insulin, it then signals the other hormones to not work the way they should. A few REMARKS TO WOMEN: if you experience the symptoms displayed in the photo on the right, please talk to your primary care provider or gynecologist. A FEW REMARKS TO MEN : You fellas need to know about this condition. First of all, women are very sensitive about their physical appearance and many grapple with weight issues - and it goes far beyond piling up food on a plate or working out at a gym. Be patient with the ladies. PCOS women who struggle with obesity have to try at least twice as hard to lose weight as other women. Oh, and some of we PCOS women have hairs growing on our face. Trust me, were aware of this and we dont like it either. We often use creams, waxes and tweezers to remove the coarse, prickly hairs. (I dont know many men who would pay someone to wax their upper lip or other areas on the face - were pretty tough, guys.) And thank you for understanding - we appreciate it when you see our beauty and determination as it appears on the inside. Thanks guys! CONCLUSION: Im not an expert on this condition - but I live with it every day. Thank you for taking time to learn about PCOS and becoming AWARE :-) (Share this post with others if you think it will help someone)
