Good evening! We werent sure last night whether or not Laurels - TopicsExpress

Good evening! We werent sure last night whether or not Laurels being extubated would be a good thing or a bad thing. C-PAP is a pretty substantial drop in support from being on the ventilator, but so far, shes doing great! We got some more details and it was exactly what we thought happened: she managed to grab a hold of her tube and arch her neck back enough to get it loose. This morning, she was having a hard time on the C-PAP. Her nurse told us that she didnt think shed be able to stay off the ventilator even long enough for us to make it in to the hospital, but our nurse and the doctor decided to start her on the steroids at noon, and shes improved pretty dramatically since then. The downside to steroids is that babies normally lose weight on them, and Laurel did lose 30 grams tonight, putting her down to 1670 grams (3.68lbs). This probably is also related to her having to work to breathe now. The C-PAP offers support, but shes doing the majority of the work by herself. Shes had a few apneic spells and a couple bradycardias. Most of them have been minor and resolve quickly. Shes active during her cares and always seems pretty curious about whats going on around her. Obviously, this step down in support is exciting, but also scary. Please pray that she can stabilize on the C-PAP. The ventilator has left her throat pretty sore, it seems, as shes pretty hoarse when she tries to make noise or cry. It causes scar tissue which augments the chronic lung disease she already has. Pray that she can stay on the C-PAP without apenic spells or bradycardias. Pray for her to gain weight in spite of the steroids. Pray that she grows stronger and defies the odds at every turn. She already has in so many ways. Please pray for our family to trust that God has great plans for our mighty lady and to find peace in this situation. Pray that God stabilizes her and that he surprises the doctors with her improvements. We are so grateful for this respite from the ventilator, and we are excited for what God is doing in her tiny body. Wed encourage you to watch the video of her getting her C-PAP mask changed that weve posted-- not only is she super cute, but you can see a bit more around her size and how she interacts. Thank you so much for your prayers!
