Good evening everyone Great news. We have exceeded 60 objections on the site. In contrast there is only one comment of support which happens to be from the Town Council. We have heard some councillors state that most people in Newbiggin are in support of this development, and that most comments are simply that the building needs a few cosmetic changes. They have provided no evidence to show that this is the case. On the contrary, the consultation is an open site on which supporters and objectors alike can post their views. The large number of objections acts as a very strong indicator of public opposition to the plans for demolition. Put this in some perspective, the Maritime Centre is one of the most contentious buildings in Newbiggin of recent years and it didnt receive a single objection during planning. Another issue that clearly comes through from the evidence of the written objections is the overwhelming opposition to the demolition of these buildings. The message coming through strongly and consistently is conserve these historic buildings, restore them and preserve the character. Do not destroy and replace them with a modern replacement. Give Newbiggin the development it deserves as the developers and County Council are giving Blyth and Berwick. Finally, we cannot underestimate the political dimension to this. The developers are acting on behalf of the people who, by and large were elected to serve the community. The planning regulations are very clear and the credibility of the process is in the spotlight. Let us hope that those that are meant to serve do not let the community down and undermine the processes in place to protect and preserve. This is the final weekend for public comments. Please put forward your objections, if you havent done so already. Even a short, simple message will carry weight. This has been a dignified campaign, with strong and reasoned arguments. We have drawn on expertise from within and from the village from across all ages. Whatever the outcome the community should be very proud of the journey. Thank you so much for your support. Together we have been strong. Lets hope that the planning process is as dignified as the community it is there to protect.
