Good evening everyone. Winter storm update: 1.2 inches of snow - TopicsExpress

Good evening everyone. Winter storm update: 1.2 inches of snow accumulated earlier today from the clipper portion of this storm here in southeast Baltimore County. After a lull in precipitation activity, additional snow accumulations can be expected this evening through tonight as snow bands are now filling in over the Baltimore metro area, north central Chesapeake bay, and the Delmarva peninsula. Low pressure continues to rapidly deepen off the coast of the Carolinas and Virginia. Deep moisture at high levels of the atmosphere continues to advance towards the north northwest as the upper trough at jet stream level acquires a negative tilt. That forces the deep moisture field associated with the baroclinic leaf and deep moisture conveyor belt towards the Chesapeake bay, the Delmarva peninsula and the Baltimore metro area through this evening into tonight. Examining the radar, we are seeing onshore northeasterly flow, deep moisture advecting in aloft, and that shows up clearly on the radar screens as bands of rain on the lower eastern shore and snow across the upper Delmarva and across portions of central Maryland and northern Virginia continues to increase in coverage and intensity. The heavier precipitation bands over the eastern shore are rotating westward around the coastal storm itself and could impact the metro baltimore area through the evening into the overnight. Areas of moderate to heavy snow could occur within these precipitation bands tonight into tomorrow morning as the coverage and intensity increases. Areas from Washington, D.C. and Hagerstown north and east are favored to see a band or multiple bands of snow and possibly a burst or two of heavy snow going through tonight. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the metro baltimore area, valid until 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Several more inches of snow can be expected tonight, likely 2-4 additional inches of additional snow accumulation on top of the 1-1.5 inches from earlier today here along the western shore of the bay in southeast baltimore county. Expect a few inches of additional accumulation in baltimore city as well. That would drive storm totals near the 3-6 inch range in general in the baltimore metro area with locally higher amounts to our north and east closer to the proximity of the coastal storm. Portions of Cecil county could see 5-10 inches of total snow accumulation, something will watch throughout the evening and into the overnight. The snow is far from done!!! The forecast for tonight, expect snow to redevelop this evening with a band or two of moderate to heavy snow possible later tonight. 2-4 inches of additional snow accumulation would drive snow totals of 3-6 inches. Lows in the mid to upper 20s. Expect hazardous travel conditions with snow and ice covered roads. During the day tomorrow, snow showers will taper off in the morning, becoming partly sunny by afternoon. Highs near 33 degrees. As hazardous as travel could be here in the Baltimore area tonight into tomorrow morning due to additional snow accumulation, it looks like a crippling and paralyzing blizzard from New York City to Boston tonight right through the day Tuesday with 18-30 inches of snow likely in some places along with thunder snow and blizzard conditions as well. We will update you again with more radar and satellite data coming up in the next hour or two as more snow comes into the region, and increases in coverage and intensity as well, especially within those heavier snow bands. Could see periods of moderate to heavy snow tonight as well. Stay tuned!
