Good evening, followers of The Walking Dead! I was thinking we - TopicsExpress

Good evening, followers of The Walking Dead! I was thinking we should have a cool fan club name. I like Dead Heads, but thats already taken. Eh, maybe we can come up with one. So, are you ready to dive in and examine the latest segment of our post-apocalyptic tale of evil versus not-as-evil? Lets get started with THE WALKING DEAD, episode 506, Consumed. Let me start off by saying how glad I am that it was NOT Beths body being tossed on the bonfire. I was not looking forward to that. Sigh of relief. I think this is the longest weve stayed on one storyline this season. Weve already dedicated two episodes with one more guaranteed. I kind of feel sorry for the goons in the hospital; theyre about to find out what its like to face the wrath of Rick. Not only does he have to rescue two of his own, but he has to go back to Atlanta to do it. (Did you see the tank from episode one?) But really this was the Daryl and Carol power hour (I read that somewhere.) With a title like Consumed you would figure fire would play a big role. There were ten separate fires, not all relevant. We found out that Carol took shelter in a law office after Rick cast her out. Why a law office? No self-respecting zombie would be caught undead in a lawyers office...too scary. Theres a touch of irony here that Ill come back to. Of course, it traced her steps back to the fall of the prison to the slaying of the two infected people to the killing of the girl, Lizzie, last season and her confession to Tyreese. Then forward to the rescue from Terminus and acceptance back into the group. You may not be aware of this, but only three people know that she killed those people at the prison, Rick, Daryl, and Tyreese, and as far as I can gather only Tyreese knows she had to kill Lizzie. I dont suppose shes made that public information yet. Thats a heavy burden to carry around even if youve been forgiven by those that know. Maybe everybody wouldnt be so sweet and understanding. Michonne might have lent Carol her sword if she had known. Carl, the twisted son of a cop (lol), would have wanted to watch. But I guess she just didnt know how they would take it. Would they forgive her? Has she forgiven herself? So was she going to skate when Daryl caught her? Probably. When he asked her she said she didnt know. Would she have careened back in? No doubt. Hey Carol, says Daryl. Lets take a drive to Atlanta! That white cross on the back of that car is cool! She agrees and theyre off on a road trip. Back to serious. Trying to find Beth. They need a place to crash. Of course, Carol knows of a place nearby. It happens to be a shelter for abused women. We already know Carols former husband was an abusive SOB, but aside from a few stories that revealed zilch, we know nothing. We do know now that she tried to escape from her situation once. Had him arrested and placed herself and Sophie into that shelter. He was probably out the next day, and she stayed a whole day and a half before going back to him. Id wager she caught hell from him. Its always worse after you try to get away. He probably beat her within an inch of her life, possibly even threatened Sophie. That brings all of her repressed anger, hate, and violence to light. Lucky for her the zombies came along. They make a nice outlet...and so do some humans. Doesnt matter to her anymore. Im curious as to why she took the copy of Tom Sawyer when they left the shelter. It has to hold some meaning. And I said Id get back to the law offices of Diggum, Deapen, Dhurty. The irony comes from the shelter. The law didnt really protect her from her husband, but worked out just fine for protection from the walkers. Now for the other half of the duo, Daryl. Hes more of a mystery but is finally getting his turn to come out. We first began seeing this when he and Beth went on a drunk and burned down the house (literally). We know he and Meryl were close out of necessity. Meryl basically raised Daryl, and hes not exactly father of the year material. His father was a drunken moonshiner who at the least was negligent toward his sons. We really dont know about his mother. Was she killed? Possibly by Daryls father? By the apocalypse? Did she run off? At this point, we just dont know. We did get a hint as he and Carol left the shelter. He took a book dealing with child abuse. Daryl was an abused and neglected child. He and his brother did what they had to do to survive. They probably accompanied their father to nefarious places, and his account their friends werent much better as they almost got killed over a TV program (He confessed that to Beth.) To the brothers the zombie apocalypse wasnt much different than everyday life. Daryl has anger issues too, but he is closer to reconciliation than Carol. She hates herself for not being able to protect Sophie..from her husband or from the walkers. She hates the person shes become because she wanted so much more from her life. She went from a battered, hopeless woman who lost her child, the only reason she was still sane, to a cold unfeeling survivalist willing to do whatever she deemed necessary. So much hate and regret is in her heart. I think theres a part of her that wants to be readmitted to the group, but she cant forgive herself, doesnt trust herself and doesnt know if they would understand. In short, shes a basket case. Daryl is the closest person to her. He gets her even though he knows she hasnt spilled all the beans. Those were dead children he was burning on that fire, and he did it knowing it was disturbing to her. They have a silent connection that is very patient. Well, we know what happened to Noah! Carol, when squeezing through a door, dont push your weapon through first! Duh. Would she have shot him after he unleashed the urban camping walkers on them? You know she would. Would she kill him? Odds are...yes. Obviously, she had a change of heart when the boy was trapped under the bookshelf about to become lunch. Heres what I think about that scene. Daryl acted like he was all bad-ass and was going to leave him, but it was just an act. How do I know? Because when Carol turned to plead for Noahs life, he was already aiming the bow. It was a test for Carol. And she passed. That was a cool van crash, wasnt it? Gonna be sore in the morning, especially bony Carol. But what about Beth? Noah tells them about the hospital and Beth. Finally, were going for the rescue. And doesnt it just figure, only one car driving around post-apocalyptic Atlanta, and Carol steps out in front of it! We now know how she got captured. The guys need a plan to rescue the girls..and they need manpower. So they find a truck with gas and head off for Rick and the posse. To be continued...
