Good evening from Diva Claudia on a Thursday night in Rochester NY. I heard something interesting on the radio the other morning. They were talking about being hangry Ever heard of it? I hadnt until then. If you hadnt, its the combination of being hungry and angry. It is apparently one of those trendy slang terms but wait! Apparently there is science behind it. Studies have shown that people who let themselves get too hungry are quick to anger (and apparently throwing things). It has to do with letting ones blood sugar get too low. . “Self-control of aggressive impulses requires energy,” says the paper’s thesis, “and much of this energy is provided by glucose derived from the food we eat.” Interesting as I thought about when my glucose levels were on wild swings up and down and my husband used to tell me I had UMS - ugly mood swings. I have found in the past two years as I have worked to keep my blood sugar levels as even as possible (by eating regularly with as little starchy, sugary, carbs as possible) that I dont have the wild swings of emotions.Or cravings or eat till I drop. So this study recommends that you dont let yourself get too hungry - I guess thats where smaller, more frequent meals come in handy. Its not something that I practice but I guess it makes sense. So maybe next time you find your blood boiling over something seemingly small and trivial, check to see if you are really hungry. And then reach for a healthy snack - sorry, chocolate not recommended - in particular, try a protein type snack - maybe a piece of cheese? Or maybe a small handful of nuts?- almonds are my favorite.
