Good evening from Southern Connecticut Weather! Currently, - TopicsExpress

Good evening from Southern Connecticut Weather! Currently, we’re tracking a coastal storm that’s moving up the Atlantic coastline after dumping heavy snow and freezing across the Deep South, bringing the area to a halt. Thankfully, the impact on our state will be nowhere near as significant as it is in the south, since the majority of the heavy precipitation will miss us to the south and the east. However, we should still get some light snow tonight into tomorrow, especially across southern and eastern areas. Right now, I’m expecting the majority of the state to see less than an inch of snow, and likely nothing at all or just flurries in our NW areas. Coastal areas could see an inch or two of snow, with the 2” amounts more likely to be found in SE areas. We can’t rule out some spot 3” accumulations in SE CT, however, for the most part, accumulations should top out below that. Snow should fall from late this evening into the morning rush, starting from SE to NW and ending from NW to SE. By 9 AM or so, I’d expect all the snow to be out of the state, and likely earlier for the majority of areas. However, the morning rush, especially along 95 and the Merritt, will likely be impacted somewhat. Delayed openings are possible for schools near the coastline and in SE CT tomorrow, check your local district before you wake the kids up! Since the air is so dry, it is possible that we will see a period of virga, which is when snow is falling from the sky and therefore reflected on the radar, but it isn’t actually hitting the ground because the dry air is eating it up. This will likely be most prevalent in northern areas where the precipitation will be very light. To know if snow is actually falling in an area, you can look at observations from the National Weather Service for your nearest reporting station by going to weather.gov and typing in your zip code. These observations update hourly. Stay safe, enjoy the snow, and thanks for reading Southern Connecticut Weather! Look for an updated long range discussion and forecast tomorrow afternoon! -SA
