Good kids come from good fathers by Fr. Bel R. San Luis, SVD June 14, 2014 Share this: On Fathers’ Day, a father received long-distance thoughtful greetings from his children living abroad. All were COLLECT calls! Poor fathers. That shows they are regarded only as material providers. * * * Today, Father’s Day, let us greet and show appreciation for all fathers and pray for all fathers — good or bad, divorced or widowed, wise or otherwise. * * * There’s an inspiring story about, J.C. Penney, owner of a dry goods chain in the USA, and how his father taught him a lesson that changed his whole outlook in running business. When he was a teenager, Jim worked for a grocery man in Hamilton, Missouri. He liked the work and had plans to make a career of it. * * * One night he came home and proudly told his family about his clever employer. The grocer had a practice of mixing low-quality coffee with the expensive brand, thus increasing his profit. Jim laughed as the related the story at the supper table. His father didn’t see anything funny about the practice. “Tell me,” he said, “if the grocer found someone cheating on his goods, do you think he would consider that as just being clever, and laugh about it?” * * * Jim could see his father was disappointed in him. His father instructed him to go to the grocer the next day and collect whatever money due him and tell the grocer he would not work for him any longer. Jobs were not plentiful in Hamilton, but Mr. Penney would rather see his son unemployed than be associated with a crooked businessman. * * * It was the father’s firm advice that taught him to be honest and stuck to his mind. It propelled him to become what he is now – owner of JC Penney, USA’s leading merchandiser. Indeed, it’s the duty of good fathers to teach their children to do what’s right, shun what’s wrong, and, most importantly, teach by example. * * * THE LIGHTER SIDE. A wife consults a psychologist, asking why her husband is always talking at night when he is asleep. The psychologist, after asking her more questions, says: “Lady, why not try to let him talk during the day, too?” * * * A teacher asked her fifth-graders to write about their personal heroes. One little boy brought his essay home. His father was much flattered to discover that his son had chosen him. “Why did you pick me?” He asked. “Because I couldn’t spell Andres Bonipasyo,” the boy replied. * * * YOU’RE INVITED… to a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City with side tour to the USA on Oct. 14-24, 2014. The shrine is where the Blessed Virgin appeared and imprinted her image on a cloak (tilma). I will serve
