Good morning - its a wet start today Im afraid and heres a few other things making the news in the County Town today: A bomb disposal expert, originally from Taunton has been awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal. Major Matthew Long, waded through deep waters before removing his body armour to make safe the Kakar Bridge in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. The soldier, from the Royal Logistic Corps, was called in to defuse the bomb on a key route to military supplies after a wire was spotted at the bridge in September last year. Fly-tipping figures released this morning by the government show incidents of the crime reported in Taunton Deane down 42 to 646 between 2011/12 and 2012/13. It was part of a county-wide drop of 8.7% from 5,687 to 5,190. All Somerset districts fell: as well as Taunton Deane, Mendip fell by 73 to 1,631, Sedgemoor was down 306 to 1,161, South Somerset down 5 to 1,659, and West Somerset down 71 to 93. Early indications for 2013/14 are that the positive trend in fewer fly-tips is continuing. Mayor of Taunton Deane, Cllr Libby Lisgo, put the civic stamp of approval on the Taunton pop-up shop that sells Christmas cards for charitable causes when she officially opened it for this year’s festive season. The shop is housed in Taunton Tourist Information Centre, next to the main library in Paul Street, and is a popular feature for those wanting to support good causes at Christmas. Last year Cards for Good Causes in Taunton bucked the national trend of decreasing sales by posting an 11% year-on-year increase. Today the Mayors engagements include a visit to the Families and Children at the Hillside Children’s Centre in Eastwick Road and an informal visit to the 40 Commando RM wives social teatime Club.
