This month in 1913, the American silent fantasy film Neptunes Daughter was filmed in Bermuda by director Herbert Brenon for a 1914 release by Universal. It starred the Australian actress and championship swimmer Annette Kellerman, pictured here. In the film the daughter of King Neptune determines to avenge the death of her sister, who was caught in a fishing net laid by the king of a country above the waves. However, she soon falls in love with the king upon whom she planned to take her revenge. Bermuda fishing boats were used to create the fairytale kingdoms military fleet, and the Crystal Caves were used for some unique subterranean sets. Boasting impressive special effects, elaborate costumes and exotic scenery, Neptunes Daughter was one of the biggest box office successes of the silent movie era.
