Good morning, #Bermuda: today is #Monday, January 26. This month in 1946, the Islands privately financed Bermuda Railway, once hailed as a magnificent transport amenity for an Island where motor cars were banned, neared the end of its short but fondly remembered lifespan: the Bermuda Government bought the whole operation for the equivalent of $115,000. Bermudas punishing climate was too much for the service dubbed Old Rattle and Shake, and it had always operated at a loss. Government did not carry the loss for much longer, and the whole operation was sold off to British Guyana after 17 years of glory - bequeathing to the Island a network of nature trails, and a rich chapter of its 20th century history.
