Good morning, #Bermuda: today is #Monday, January 5. Bermuda’s deadly reefs meant that the Island was justly feared by mariners for centuries. On this date in 1937, in a crucial step that helped open Bermudas shores to overseas travel, radio engineer Bill Forbes boarded the HMS Dragon, which headed out from Dockyard to circle the Island. Forbes calculated and logged radio direction-finding calibrations that would be used not just by approaching ships, but aircraft as well. The job tied in with a land radio project, and the building up a shortwave radio station later in the year at the Peak in Smith’s, which made Bermuda accessible not just to shipping, but to the navigators of Imperial Airways and Pan American World Airways. Images from the former air service are shown here, from the dawn of the Island’s air travel industry.
