Good morning, #Bermuda: today is #Tuesday, January 27. On this date in 1978, the cult monster movie “The Bermuda Depths” - one of only two movies ever to be filmed entirely in Bermuda – was telecast and became a smash hit. The surreal film was another creation from Bermudian Arthur Rankin, Jr., who wrote the film and whose company Rankin/Bass produced it. The plot follows a directionless young man (played by Leigh McCloskey), a beautiful and haunting spirit (Connie Sellecca) and a giant sea-turtle with a violent streak – whose bizarre noises are actually taken from humpback whale songs. Along with The Ivory Ape, the other Rankin/Bass movie filmed completely on location in Bermuda, Mr Rankin produced The Bermuda Depths for the ABC-TV networks Friday night movie slot. Both The Bermuda Depths and The Ivory Ape received the highest ratings out of any films shown that year on ABC, Mr Rankin, who died last year, told this newspaper in 2009. The Bermuda Depths and The Ivory Ape remain the only two movies to be filmed completely in Bermuda - and the only two to be made by a Bermudian.
