Good morning! Do you need to own a 20 megapixel camera? Is bigger always better?? Are more megapixels necessary? How large are the high-res files on your Inkedfingers dvd? Weve had several questions about all of this lately and with the advent of digital cameras in the hands of the every-day man as high as 20+ megapixel, we experience a whole new quandary! The question of the year (which deserves a blog post in its entirety) : Is bigger always better?? Are more megapixels necessary? In short, the answer is no and no you absolutely do not need a 5MB file to print a large fabulous photo! Because were working with millions of files every year, the feedback we got when we were saving files as large as we could (Hey! Bigger is better, we thought!) was clients not even able to open their dvd because they didnt have enough space on their hard drive. So we slimmed it down to the lowest high-res even we could get by with to save space and definitely not sacrifice quality! To address this a bit more in depth, Im going to point you to a great article to answer the ultimate question: What IS high-res? The article is a year or two old but the information is no less relevant. electronics.howstuffworks/cameras-photography/digital/digital-camera3.htm What do we shoot with here at Inkedfingers? We shoot in RAW with Nikon d700(s) and save our files in general ~1mb per photo. With this file we order large gallery wraps (think 20x30) print albums up to 12x12 and everything in between. I hope this brings to light a bit more about high-res and feel free to email me with any other questions/thoughts. Obviously every photographer has their own methods/ideas but the end goal is the same: what is the size of file we can provide our clients to not limit their creativity and not sacrifice quality! Id love to hear your comments! xo, carli
