Good morning Ecowarriors, A recent leak from the IPCC report - TopicsExpress

Good morning Ecowarriors, A recent leak from the IPCC report indicates that we are in trouble. Now, to be clear, I believe that climate change has been something which has been going on long before humans have been alive. Climate change is a natural part of our planets characteristics. However, what is different, is that humans have so badly changed the environmental because of their activities that climate change may be accelerated. Or maybe, we have changed the direction of climate change completely, I dont know. If the earth could have spoken, she would have told us. Anyways, the point is that according to this report, things are really bad. It seems that there is a bleak future of lots of natural disasters in front of us and we not doing enough to change it. In terms of Trinidad and Tobago, we are a small island developing state and as an island, we are at great risk for climate change impacts. Firstly, there is the sea level rise which means that our island may get smaller (get it? water rises and makes the land smaller). More importantly though is that changes in sea level means that there is greater change of natural disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes, which can also reek havoc in a small island like ours. Who cares if the land gets smaller? It just means that you can move, right? Yes, you can move but so far, the climate change impact is not localised, it is across the world. So, you might just be moving to another location where climate change impacts are as bad or worse. I think the biggest problem is that most people do not understand how one issue - raising sea levels - can affect them. Many of you might be saying - well, I live in Tabaquite or St. Joseph, far from the sea so I safe. Even though, you might not get direct impacts, there are indirect ones as well that you need to consider. For example, in the time of storms, etc, drinking water becomes very important. Tsunamis and hurricanes cause flooding which contaminates water supplies. This seemingly unlimited resource becomes more precious than Gold and this is why it is very important that we manage our personal water supplies very carefully and never waste this resource. Ecowarriors, please read the article and educate yourself. Also, consider keeping a storm kit at home at all times. As islanders, we should always have a storm kit in case of any emergency.
