Good morning Facebook. Im up at 3:05 am watching a controversial film entitled Dark Girls Its a documentary on social and cultural prejudices that dark skinned women face throughout the world. It explores the root of classism, racism and the lack of self esteem within a segment of cultures. I recommend that you watch it. I was very moved. And I found it to be very disturbing. It shows how, at a very young age, dark skinned girls are taught to feel that they are ugly. Simply because their dark. That their beneath light skinned, and in many case white girls. And most of the text it perpetuated by our own race. This problem is not just in America, but worldwide. Even in Africa. Yes, Africa. Its said that images on tv feeds on the degradation of our people. The same as the media here in America loves to put fair skinned people on television, so is it this way around the world. I look around at many of my sisters of color and see how when I was younger, in school, it was taught that whatever a boy can do... a girl could do. Possibly even better. And I used to wonder... how could they just say such a thing? Well, as I got older I realised that we had to boost theyre self esteem. Hoping to get them to see their own self worth. After all these years we have taken a huge step backward. Now making young girls believe; unless you wear weave, a bunch of makeup, fake eye lashes and Call yourself a bad b#*ch/ Barbie, your not of much worth. It reminds me of the late 80s when most black people had to have a jeherie curl. A sign of self loathing. And yes, I wore one. It was the stupidest thing I could have did. We as a people MUST start to love the uniqueness of ourselves. Black women, dark or light... love yourselves. And black men, stop looking down on the precious jewel, that is the black woman. Simply because shes dark. That light skinned woman came from a dark skinned woman. Black woman dark/light... in the words of India Irie ; You are not your hair, you are not your skin. You are the soul that IS within. If you dont Love and respect yourself, who will? I love you all, be it dark/ light. YOU ARE ROYAL
