Good morning Friends, Last night, I was part of MBC’s Golden Jubilee. This is no mean achievement at all and we should be proud of this moment as nation. I accepted to join in these celebrations because of my firm belief in MBC’s independence but also freedom of the media in the country. Freedom of the press is not a privilege to be offered to the media by any person but it is a right enshrined in our Republican Constitution. My Government will, therefore, ensure that there is access to public information and in this regard we shall cooperate with all relevant stakeholders, including the media in passing and implementation of the Access to Information Bill into law. I am also aware of the agenda-setting role of the media, including MBC and my Government will support the media to discharge their duties freely and professionally. Gone are the days when media was subjected to punitive measures for doing their job. My commitment and that of my Government does not mean that we condone unprofessional and unethical behaviour in discharge of their duty as media. Every trade and profession must adhere to its laws, principles, norms and ethics. Where these are flouted appropriate measures must apply according to the dictates of the law as well as those of that trade. May God bless Malawi
