Good morning: Lets address that resume. Oh boy have I been THERE! When I walked frantically into AW over 8 years ago, panicked and scared... I was a full on 100% mess! That includes my state of mind (had been downsized, left a good paying job to take another and then was..GASP... LET GO!) AND my resume. My work history is an impressive glob of different industries, positions, responsibilities and titles... yet smoosh em all onto one paper and one would argue that I could present it to a pharmacy for a prescription for medications to cure cant sit still-itis. Never having held more than one job at a time at that moment... I had more job titles and positions than could be crammed onto one page. It happens. So ... Don Dressler (my Stanislaus County Alliance Worknet worker, R.I.P.) handed me a tissue, basically told me to pull myself together, took charge and started guiding me in the process of changing my written representation. He introduced me to the functional resume. Before I knew it I had a free flowing, legitimately impressive resume. This was the document used to gain the position which I currently hold in the industry of Private Post Secondary Education, somewhere I would have NEVER thought to look. Our resumes are, lets face it, the FIRST thing an employer will look to as being US. Generally speaking most employers utilize this first impression as their tool to gauge our future for interview... or round file. I fully suggest that you take a really good look at what you are sending out to represent you. Is your contact information clearly visible? Professional? Accurate? Have you given yourself credit for your talents? Did you (awww come on admit it... be honest) cut and paste a standard objective up at the top or did you actually dig deep and compose your own? All of these elements are critical because typically we cannot and are not permitted to just mosey on into a potential employer, shake hands and say... Im your guy/girl any more. There are plenty of resources within Stanislaus County that will assist you with professional resume composure for free. I fully suggest you use them. They are there for you. Have a beautiful day...
