Good morning,,,Midland? yes, we made it home. 9 days, over 4500 miles. After we ate at Marias in Santa Fe, we decided to go for it and bring it home. It was great on the way home from Alaska to get to stop by and see Kevin, Becky, JR, and Carmen. Family support and being welcomed with open arms, getting a home cooked meal, we can never get enough of. Wish we had more time to spend with them. The weather really wasnt as bad as it could have been. Alaska, and the far North usually has a lot of rain. We really only got rained on 3 to 4 times, in small amounts, and would ride in and out of it. We did get good and wet when leaving Anchorage, and then we rode out of that, then again at Tok, we rode into the rain across the border, and were only in it for a couple of hours. The Alaska Highway is notorious for having bad sections of road, frost heaves, pot holes, gravel you name it. You have to be aware at all times driving or riding this hwy. Frost heaves can show up when least expected and you may go air born, or, all of a sudden, its gravel, not good for a motorcyclist. The worst section of the hwy, in our opinion would be from Destruction Bay to the AK border. About a 150 mile stretch. There is a taste of everything in the mix. Long gravel sections, pot holes, and frost heaves. For us, our bikes are designed for rough roads, even a little of off road stuff. So it really didnt slow us down much, but did keep us on our toes and woke us up for the adventure. We really enjoyed this section more when coming back when it was wet. The wet gravel seamed like it had more traction, and the pot holes stood out better with water in them. We talked to a couple of riders from Canada that were on BMW 800s. They were petrified of this section of hwy. They had no dirt-biking experience. So, to them, this section of hwy was a nightmare. To us, we wanted bigger frost heaves, and liked navigating through the pot holes and gravel. They were fighting their bikes trying to keep them up right at 10mph. You ride your ride, but, if you have plans to ride a motorcycle to Alaska, go out and practice on a gravel oil field road to get a taste of what its like. LOL! This trip was like our Magnum-opus, my Xanadu. I, did enjoy listening to Rush while traveling through Canadas vast forests. I could go on and on with stories, we will post a few follow up things later about our gear and the bikes. So for now, just glad to be home, and ready to go to work, and get back on my drums and bicycle. Zach is about to start his career, his 1st day of work starts in a couple of weeks in San Antonio. Empty nest is here, on to the next adventure!
