Good morning, Newark, New Jersey, this is one of your many mayors. If only I had an on/off switch for my thoughts…Id be fast asleep instead of awake and posting whats on my mind at this time, but I dont, so here goes… I m up and bumping around my house around 3:00 a.m. looking for my old pink and yellow Newark Illustrated teeshirt in the basement after jotting down some notes for my speaking engagement at 2 Cedar St. on Tuesday, May 20th. I know its here, but where? Oh well, as I put the batteries to my cameras on charge for the occasion, I thought about one of the many things that Mayor-elect Ras Baraka said as he spoke on Saturday when The Newark Promise was unveiled. He said that those who know him, know that he does not like to be idolized. I hope that I can say I am one that has grown to know him just enough to know that much already and I idolize no man for that matter. What Ras Baraka is to me is a man with a message…our message. Im know that he is many things to many people. He has definitely been much more than the principal of Central High School and the South Ward Councilman…those positions that he earned, by the way of hard work and dedication. If youve ever heard him speak with his people in the streets, schools and religious centers of this city, you probably have heard him say, God made me this way!. At present, Ras Baraka is a messenger for the many countless voices of Newark, New Jersey. The voices that power brokers and political jokers have ignored and counted out long ago, again and again, and again. Like it or not, he speaks the truth from our point of view and we do have one. We are Newark…hear our roar! No more will we elect those to office who tax us, yet fail to represent us and then lie to us and steal from us instead. We believe in Newark no matter what has been done to us or what we have done to ourselves. On May 13, 2014, the people of Newark boldly put Ras Baraka in office to lead our beautiful city, on purpose with our crystal clear message to the political bosses, the state-appointed superintendent of schools and the bully who appointed her…that man in Statehouse in Trenton who governs this state like a heartless dictator. We the people of Newark will make the choices for ourselves and our own babies. We have a voice and play a leading role in what happens in Newark, New Jersey, our stage for we are Newark, New Jersey! Those of us who voted for Mayor-elect Ras Baraka to lead this, our city did so because he represents us and unlike Governor Chris Christie, Ras Baraka cares about this community…our criticisms and all. With that being said, lm going back to bed. #TGBTG!
