Good morning... Risk of Severe Weather: Medium, Locally High Significant Weather: Snow Showers. Ice. Freezing Fog Patches Wind: Generally light and variable, though S or SW’ly light or moderate across Ireland later. Summary: A few sleet and snow showers across parts of E and NE England, otherwise dry, cold but sunny for many areas. Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow developing across Ireland this afternoon. Forecast: It’s a very cold start to the new working week, in fact the coldest day so far this winter with temperatures having fallen below -10C across parts of the north of the UK and with -11C at Loch Glascarnoch being one of the lowest temperatures not just this winter, but in a few years. The day starts dry and bright for many but with a widespread frost and icy patches, but a few wintry showers (rain, hail, sleet and snow) are in evidence across NE England, the far west of Wales and Cornwall. As the day progresses many areas of England, Wales and Scotland will be dry but despite plenty of bright or sunny spells it will be cold. A few wintry showers may continue across E England at times, but these becoming increasingly well scattered and isolated. In contrast across Ireland cloud will thicken with outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow developing here as a weather front moves in off the Atlantic. By the end of the afternoon temperatures will rapidly fall once again beneath clear skies across many areas and this then sets the scene for another very cold night on Monday night with a further moderate or severe frost, icy patches and some freezing fog too. Cloudier and damp conditions will persist across Ireland though with some patchy rain, sleet and snow at times. Temperatures will struggle to rise today and for a large portion of the UK today will be the coldest day of the winter with maximum temperatures ranging between 1C and 4C. However, across higher ground of Scotland and N England, especially where there is any snow cover, then temperatures may not rise above freezing and thus lead to an ‘ice day’. Temperatures will quickly fall this evening with temperatures well below freezing tonight. Chief Forecaster: MH
