Good morning! Thank you, everyone for the hundreds of messages Ive received! I am humbled, truly, by the out pouring of support and love youve been sending my way. Ive been trying to figure out what to say for the past few days now. Ive started writing at least four or five times now and have just as many Facebook tabs open in my web browser. There is no close, or almost in politics. Either you win or lose... succeed or fail; and I failed Maui... Thoughts keep running through my head that if I had just had a little more time, and a little more help—if people had kept their word—or if the phone banking hadnt been prematurely terminated...if, if, if... but you know what? There are no ifs. Everyone did the best that they could with the information that they had at the time. I believe that. We did our best. Unfortunately, we just didnt win this time. I want to thank my very solid core team of volunteers. Paul, Deb, Tommy, Autumn, Steve, Jackie and Meryl, Jake Garan, Kiva, and my Treasurer, Anthony, you guys are AWESOME! I am so honored to now count you among my friends. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for volunteering your time, energy, and resources to the campaign. Thank you for loving Maui and its people as much as I do. You each hold a special place in my heart. To my right hand, super amazing lover, partner, mate, friend, and campaign manager, Joe, thank you for dedicating every non working minute to the campaign. You did one hell of a job for never having done this before! Thank you for stepping up! Thank you for honoring your word to work hard and to support me. Thank you for all of the sacrifices you made to make this possible. Thank you for the countless 20 hr days that you put in. Thank you for supporting me and my kids financially and for supporting my vision for a healthy environment, people, and economy for Maui nui. I love you and am so privileged to stand at your side as we move forward. To everyone else who came out and stood on the side of the road with me, knocked on doors, made phone calls, donated, wrote letters to the editor, or held me in their thoughts and prayers, MAHALO! Plenty!! There have been so many of you, that it would take all day to list you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you! A thousand times thank you! If theres one thing I think many of us learned in this campaign process, it was how to be bold. So many of us stepped out and got involved for the first time. I never imagined that I would go from being the shy person in the back corner of the room, to the one standing up and saying, Hey! Enough already! Maui deserves better! and I think the same is true for many of you. To everyone who voted for me. Thank you for the faith and confidence you placed in me! It is a confidence and a trust that I will never take for granted and I will not be deterred. We are not done! While at your doors, I gave thousands of you my personal phone number. That is the very phone number Ive had since I was 18 and is the number my children call me on. You are ALL still welcome to call me if you need me. I am happy to help you in any way I can (please, just remember that is my personal cellphone haha!). I hope each of you feel as proud as I do for the momentum weve created! Im sorry I wasnt successful THIS time, but we do not give up. There is no giving up. We move forward. We CAN have our voices heard and we can reclaim our government so that it works for us—as a people—not for corporations. People over profits, always. We move forward and we keep working! Kūlia i ka nu‘u!
