Good morning. The semester exams are winding to a close and most - TopicsExpress

Good morning. The semester exams are winding to a close and most teachers are engaged in the necessary chore of assessing answer papers. As usual, I find the entire exercise both illuminating and entertaining. I am intensely grateful to the child who has written that the antonym (opposite) of the word mobile, is, remote I am also extremely fortunate to be teaching something that brings me into contact with teenagers who have such a brilliant flair for writing, and such an amazing range of vocabulary that I am lost in admiration. This is one of the perks of my profession. But, to get down to brass tacks: It is wrong to say, I was seeing the birds The correct form is, I was looking at the birds/ I see the birds. It is wrong to say I was listening the thunder. The correct form is I hear thunder. It is not Marry Kom (Unless you wish to marry Mr. Kom), it is Mary Kom. It is not mamary, but memory. Mamary with the addition of an extra m in the right place, means something else altogether. No, I do not propose to tell you what it is, here. There is a difference between carrier and career. A carrier is something which carries something else, as in, goods carrier and a career is a job, or profession. No, there is no word called carrer, as far as I know. It is wrong to say, We loose hope, since the word loose is the opposite of tight; when you lose hope, you become hopeless, which is what you probably want to say. When you feel lucky, you become grateful, not greatful. The noun form of the word grateful, is gratitude I think that is enough for today. Have a blessed day.
