Good morning again residents: Griffith is the hub of great news and activity! Our city is the host of the 2014 NSW Wine Awards judging, the first time the NSW Wine Awards judging will be hosted in a wine region - starting with Griffith this year and rotating round the wine regions of NSW in future years. A record number of wine entries have been received from around the state for judging, which will be hosted in Griffith on September 30 and October 1. The 3,300 bottles of wine received for this year’s competition have been stored carefully in Griffith in the lead up to the 2014 NSW Wine Awards, with judging to take place on Tuesday, September 30 and Wednesday, October 1 at the Griffith Exies club. Hosting the awards in a regional city further supports the objectives of the NSW Wine Awards to promote the diversity and quality of the state’s wine regions, according to Tom Ward, President of the New South Wales Wine Industry Association. “The move also provides additional opportunities with our working partnerships with the NSW Government to highlight our wine regions and the unique experiences and produce they offer,” Mr Ward said. “We are excited to be judging in Griffith for 2014 as Riverina winemakers are a significant part of the NSW wine industry, producing 1 in 4 glasses of Australian wine. We are also looking forward to seeing the new vintages, including alternative varietals such as Durif, which are putting the region on centre stage with local and international media,” Mr Ward added. This year’s judging panel is chaired by PJ Charteris and also includes well-respected wine-industry individuals Matt Harrop, Russell Cody, Kate Goodman, Tom Hogan, Drew Tuckwell, Adrian Sparks, Liz Jackson, Usher Tinkler and Toni Paterson. The NSW Wine Awards were created in 1996 to build awareness of the quality of wines produced in NSW. Since inception, the awards have become an indicator of the growth and diversity of the State’s wine industry and recognise the potential of new and established regions within NSW.
